A lot of people think 'app' is the neologism and 'application' the original base word. It turns out that it's the other way around.
For the longest time, coders around the planet hacked ops into procs into apps. Only as the size of the code grew, we found that complication after complication arose. And that's how we got the word 'application'.
It's actually the contraction of 'app' and 'complication'.
Apt corporate jokes and humor can go a long way.
Unfortunately, that's rare, and what actually happens is that we end up wishing that they *would* go a long way... far far away from us.
